BSSO
HISTORY

The BSSO was originally founded at San Diego State University campus in 1994 as a club. The organization was founded to give support to the African American students majoring in the sciences. In the Fall of 1994 the BSSO club was reorganized by Will Wilson, along with the help of Michelle Johnson, Lawrence Stitt, Todd Williams, and Kris Brown.

Lateefah Spires Brown
Greetings fellow BSSO Alumni,

It has been a long time since we were all in the same place at the same time.  I hope this fall season finds you well.

During your time at SDSU, as a member of the Black Student Science Organization, the club served as a refuge and a haven for you to study and interact with like-minded students who shared your interest in high academic achievement. Since you’ve been gone, the BSSO has blossomed into a truly close knit community of learners who mentor, encourage and support one another under the faculty advisorship of Dr. Estralita Martin.
I am reaching out to you in an effort to bridge the gap between BSSO past alumni and recent alumni plus undergrads. I am writing to ask if you would be willing to reconnect with the BSSO in a few ways:

  1. Provide the BSSO Alumni Association with your contact information to keep you apprised of upcoming events and announcements.

  2. Share your email address with members interested in working in fields where you currently serve and have expertise.

  3. When you’re in town, attend BSSO potlucks or other events (See #7).

  4. Present (in person or via video interview if you’re out of town) your career adventures with an intimate group of undergrads and other alumni.

  5. Consider donating to support our annual scholarship fund.

  6. Consider donating to BSSO’s annual Hope for Haiti event. You can start this now by setting your loose change aside for this event which takes place in February.

  7. Finally, there is an Alumni Information Panel scheduled for Saturday, November 10, 2018  to be followed by a potluck at Dr. Martin’s home. The Alumni Association is looking for past alumni (as opposed to more recent alumni) to sit on the panel and discuss things you wish you knew earlier in you academic career or professional career.

Please reply directly to me via email at lspbrown01@gmail.com if you are available to serve on this panel and help usher the next group of BSSO professionals into the world of higher education and the world of work. Please consider joining this panel if you live nearby or if you will be in town on Saturday, November 10th.

If you are willing to participate in one or all of these ways please click on the link below to complete a Google Form to submit your information.

For those who want to participate, but choose to skip the Google Form, feel free to call, text, or email me at the email address below to provide your contact information. This is my personal contact information. I will answer when you call and/or email.

Also, if you are in contact with any other alumni whom I have not attached to this email feel free to forward this email to them and send me their contact info so that I may reach out to them as well.

If you haven’t done so lately, please visit the BSSO Alumni Association website and take a look around. Just point your browser to http://www.bssoaa.org. Also, take a look at the BSSO undergraduate website: http://www.bsso.org. The BSSO has come a long way since the days of library study groups, journal club presentations and snowboarding trips. Please consider re-connecting and reaching back to help those who follow in your footsteps. Yours are the shoulders upon which they will stand.
